5 Signs Your MacBook is Begging for Immediate Maintenance

5 Signs Your MacBook is Begging for Immediate Maintenance

Everybody loves MacBooks and I am a big fan of them too. I personally like them for their longer lifespan, better processors, and great user interface. But sometimes, we start getting signs or warnings from our loved Macs. We knowingly or unknowingly ignore these signs which leads to a shorter lifespan of Macs. And not just that, it also kills our productivity. For instance, how can you do your best work on a sluggish Mac?

Today, in this blog, we will talk about those 5 signs. If you see these five signs on your Mac, then do not ignore them. Act fast and get them fixed, or they can damage your Mac in the long run.

Sign #1: Fan Noise Sounds Like an Airplane Taking Off

Every Mac user must have faced it at least once in their life. When doing heavy multi-tasking like video editing, even the fastest Macs’ fans sound loud.

If it’s once in a while, that’s okay. But if you are constantly facing this noise, then you should take it seriously.

When there is too much pressure on the CPU, the inner temperature spikes, forcing the fans to work at maximum capacity.

To fix this, you can search for MacBook fan so loud fixes and read some online blogs to solve the problem. If you still face that issue, I would give you general advice: do not put too much pressure on your laptop. Close unwanted tabs and windows, and keep only those open that are useful.

Sign #2: The Constant Appearance of the “Beachball of Death”

It is a beachball, but it is not good if you are getting this on your Mac. Officially, it is called a spinning wait cursor. This occurs due to RAM issues on your Mac.

If you are one of those who keep multiple tabs open, then I am sure you must have seen this beachball on your Mac.

A basic thing I do to avoid this is to keep at least 20-30% of internal storage free. And I also keep an eye on the Activity monitor to check the RAM regularly. In the Activity Monitor, we can also see which apps are consuming too much RAM.

Neglecting this issue can lead to long-term damage to your Mac and significantly hinder your daily productivity.

Sign #3: Your Battery Drains in Record Time

Are you noticing any sudden battery drops on your Mac? If it’s an old MacBook, that’s okay. Battery backup reduces with time, but if it’s a new Mac (less than 1 year old) and you start noticing sudden battery drains, then you should take it seriously.

Last year, I also faced this issue where my Mac’s battery was draining super fast. Later, I found that it was due to a software glitch. I immediately removed that software, and my battery backup became normal.

So, if you are facing this issue, check for software glitches. One more thing you can do is check the “Battery Health” settings in macOS to see if the system is recommending a replacement. If it is, then get a new battery. If your Mac is under the warranty period, then you can also get a new battery replacement for free.

Sign #4: Unexplained Heat (Thermal Throttling)

Have you ever felt your Mac’s physical chassis becoming super hot to the touch? This is what we call Thermal Throttling.

This is more experienced in Macs with no fan. So, if there is no fan, the Mac will start underperforming to reduce CPU usage.

I experienced this once when I was editing a video. The section above my keyboard became super hot. But it automatically became normal after some time, and I was happily editing after that.

So, if you also observe this sign on your Mac, then don’t panic. Most importantly, do not use your Mac on pillows or beds. Otherwise, they can block the exhaust vents.

Sign #5: The “Disk Almost Full” Warning (The Silent Killer)

I remember one friend of mine who used to avoid these disk full warnings, and one day, his system crashed. That’s why I always advise everyone to keep at least 10-15% of the total SSD space empty. This ensures you have enough space available to make your Mac function properly.

If you don’t keep some empty space, then eventually your Mac will become sluggish. Because macOS requires at least 10-20% of free space for virtual memory (swap files) to operate smoothly.

If you are someone who likes to use the latest macOS, then you will not be able to update your Mac because of low disk space. Also, if you don’t clear your SSD on time, the lifespan of the SSD can be reduced, and you might need to buy a new SSD soon.

Conclusion

If you are observing any of these 5 signs, then don’t ignore them. Because a minor maintenance task can turn into a costly hardware repair.

There are very easy solutions available to these problems that do not cost a hefty amount of money.

Take immediate action by setting aside 15 minutes today to perform a basic digital and physical cleanup of your Mac. This will not only improve the lifespan of your Mac but also increase your productivity.
